Some Captured History of Glanamman and GarnantThe Amman Inn, GlanammanThe Amman Inn was reputedly built by John Morgan, who may be shown in the above photograph. Local people would remember it as the Amman Hotel which closed as a public house in the 1990's. Its close proximity to Cross Keys Station platform would have been an advantagous location for travellers. "Amman" public house was listed in the 1880 edition of Slaters Directory, with John Morgan shown as the proprietor. John Morgan is also listed as a local stonemason and stone cutter in the same edition. A map dated around 1891 shows a public house at this location, next to the railway on Station Road. For some reason, there is no reference to the Amman public house in the 1895 edition of Kelly's Directory. Census documents show that John Morgan was the Innkeeper of the Salutation (now Amman Utd RFC) in 1871 but it is unlikely that he built it as another stonemason named Josiah Jenkins was living at the Salutation at the time of the previous census in 1861. By 1910, the wife of Evan Morgan was the proprietress and the building is listed in Kelly's Directory as "Amman Hotel". The 1923 edition showed the proprietress as Miss M. E. Morgan. A telephone directory dated 1920 also shows Miss M. E. Morgan as the proprietress and gives the phone number of the Amman Hotel as "Glanamman 11".
